Disciplined Walk with God Report

First, as usual, we sang. 🙂 (And then we prayed, but we don’t have any pictures of that…)

Next it was time for the message…

What we feed will grow. We have to eat food for our physical bodies to grow–in the same way, we must feed our spirits so they grow. Start now in forming good habits!

Pray and read the Bible a little every day, and then increase slowly. Don’t give up if you miss a day or get discouraged. Keep going! The longer you do it, the more natural it becomes.

Don’t keep doing your devotions the same way–switch it up to prevent it becoming a dull routine. For prayer, you could do: prayer journaling, praying aloud, praying scripture, prayer walking, etc. For Bible reading, you could try: Reading whole books at a time, reading a verse at a time, following a plan, reading “randomly”, topical studies, etc.

(In the above picture we were raising our hands about having started Bible reading at some point and then stopping, I think :P)

We read and talked through Matthew 6:1-21

There is also fasting, meditation (thinking hard, focusing our minds), giving, memorizing, and so on. These are also important!

Why is it important to have a disciplined walk with God?

NOT to look good. NOT so other people see it. NOT to get to heaven or earn God’s favor.

TO know God more. TO learn God’s will and obey it. TO grow in love. TO walk in the spirit, not the flesh. TO become more disciplined so that we might become more FREE. TO direct our hearts and minds in the right way. (set your mind on things above)

The disciplines are not the end goal. They merely enable us to to achieve the goal–knowing Christ more, glorifying Him, loving others with His kind of love, gaining heavenly riches.

Then it was time for testimonies!

Elisa, Cheryl, Emily and Brianne also shared. Thank you girls for being brave and speaking up!! You all did a wonderful job. Sharing testimonies not only blesses and encourages us girls–it also glorifies God and His work in your lives. 🙂

And then it was activity time! This week we memorized verses together as small groups.

The whole group minus me! (we were waiting for the rest of the moms to come so they could watch us say our verses)

My group (the Sunbeams, pictured in the first row in the photo above) memorized 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

The Tealights memorized Romans 12:1-2

The Light Houses memorized Psalm 119:9-11

The Sparklers memorized Psalm 1: 1-3.

And, finally, we had tea time! Thank you to Mrs. Gillham for providing snack and to the other moms who helped prepare!!

As usual, please read and (discuss with your parents) the lesson in your Bright Lights notebooks. 🙂 The assignment for this week is to spend some time in the Bible and in prayer consistently the next two weeks! Below are links to some Bible reading plans if you are interested.

New Testament in One Month

Bible in One Year

Looking forward to seeing you all at our meeting next month on October 14th! Just a heads up–September has 5 Mondays, which means that it will be THREE weeks until the next meeting instead of two. (We meet on second and fourth Mondays, not every other Monday.)

Please keep praying for each other! If you want to contact me for any reason, go right ahead. My email address is authoressalin @ gmail.com (just take out the spaces)

  1. Hello Carissa & Hannah,

I just wanted to say thanks for keeping a blog of your Bright Lights group – it is such a blessing and encouragement to see what the Lord is doing in your group. Its also great for ideas when I’m brain dead and have a BL meeting to prepare for! 🙂 May the Lord continue to bless you and your group of young ladies as you shine as Bright Lights for our Savior in Florida.

    In Christ,

    • Hi Sara,

Thanks for the comment! You are welcome. 🙂 I’m glad it has been a help and encouragement to you as you lead your group. (And I totally understand about the brain dead part of preparing for Bright Lights…) How long have you been doing Bright Lights?

It’s kind of funny that you commented, because I normally am just thinking of the moms and girls who attend our group when I post–but now I know there are other Bright Lights leaders (or maybe just you!) who read it. 🙂

I stopped by your website as well–it looks great! Very well put together. 🙂

May God bless you and your group as well!

      God be with you,

  2. Hey Carissa, I just saw the ” thank you Mrs. Gilham” part, and I’m sure my mom would say you’re welcome, so I’m saying it for her, so you’re welcome!
